Report Editor
Updating a 15 year old report editor

April 2025
Reporting is one of Addepar's oldest and most heavily used products — but it hadn't kept up with the rest of the platform's new visual language. I partnered with another designer, a researcher, a PM, and a few engineers to bring the new design system to the Report Editor, using the redesign as a chance to fix real UX gaps along the way.
initial pROBLEM
The report editor looks and feels outdated, while lacking modern editor features.
research
Four 45–60 minute design-sprint cycles, one per week, with 16 internal participants. Each cycle focused on a different area: layout and widgets, aligning elements and sections, adding sections and headers, and section templates.
pROBLEM reframe
The new UI read as clean and learnable on its own — but only mattered if it still felt like the rest of the platform. The real question became: how do we introduce real UX improvements without making the Report Editor feel disconnected from the rest of the product?
timeline
Four weekly research cycles, each building on the last and 2 months of design work
solution
Our concept hinges:
Redesigning the look and feel of the decade old interface to align with the rest of our platform
Modernizing the UI with editor features like zoom, rulers, and grids
Adding quality of life fixes like keyboard shortcuts, snapping, hiding, and bulk editing
Adding global, templated approaches to editing headers, sections, and reports
